Hill Country in May

Great time to visit

May is one of the best months to visit Hill Country.

All Months

Spring owns the Hill Country calendar, and for good reason. March through May brings wildflower season, when bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and dozens of other species turn entire hillsides into living murals. Peak bloom usually hits mid to late April, but timing varies with rainfall. Book accommodations early — Fredericksburg hotels fill up months in advance during bluebonnet weekends. Fall runs a close second, with October and November offering perfect weather for wine tasting and outdoor activities. Temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s, humidity drops, and the crowds thin out after summer. Winter stays mild — you'll see plenty of 60-degree days perfect for hiking Enchanted Rock or exploring town squares. Summer gets hot and crowded. July and August regularly hit the upper 90s, and every river and swimming hole fills with tubers and families. But if you can handle the heat, summer evenings on restaurant patios with live music make it worthwhile. Just book everything early and expect higher prices.
