Hampton Roads in May
Great time to visit
May is one of the best months to visit Hampton Roads.
All Months
April through June offers the sweet spot: mild temperatures, blooming azaleas at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, and manageable crowds. The Azalea Festival in April transforms Norfolk into a pink paradise, while May brings perfect beach weather without summer's humidity. September and October deliver warm days and cool nights, plus the region's best fishing. Summer means packed beaches, $25 parking, and afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly. But if you're coming for Virginia Beach's boardwalk scene, June through August is unavoidable. Winter stays surprisingly mild — January averages 45 degrees — making it perfect for exploring indoor attractions like the Chrysler Museum or Nauticus. Just know that many seasonal restaurants close December through February, and the ocean's too cold for swimming until late April.
