Guatemala in December
Great time to visit
December is one of the best months to visit Guatemala.
All Months
Dry season (November through April) is Guatemala's sweet spot. Skies stay clear, temperatures hover around 75°F in the highlands, and you can actually see those famous volcano views. This is peak season, so expect crowds in Antigua and higher prices everywhere.
December and January are ideal for volcano hikes. The air is crisp, views are crystal clear, and you won't melt climbing Volcán Pacaya. Book accommodations early — Christmas and New Year bring both international tourists and Guatemalan families on vacation.
March and April heat up but remain dry. Perfect for exploring Tikal before the rains return. The jungle is less humid, and wildlife is easier to spot near water sources.
Rainy season (May through October) isn't a complete washout. Mornings often start sunny, with afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly. The countryside turns emerald green, waterfalls run full, and prices drop significantly. But roads to remote areas can become impassable, and some tours cancel due to weather.
Avoid September and October if possible. These months see the heaviest rains, and Hurricane season can disrupt travel plans. Lake Atitlán looks moody under storm clouds, but you might spend days stuck indoors.
Semana Santa (Easter week) is Guatemala's biggest holiday. Antigua hosts elaborate processions with colorful sawdust carpets, but the city becomes impossibly crowded. Book months ahead or skip this week entirely.
