Grey Glacier in December

Great time to visit

December is one of the best months to visit Grey Glacier.

All Months

November through March offers the most stable weather and longest daylight hours — up to 17 hours in December. This is peak season, so expect crowds at popular viewpoints and higher accommodation prices. December and January bring the warmest temperatures (10-15°C during the day), but also the strongest winds. The famous Patagonian wind can make hiking miserable, but it also clears clouds quickly, giving you those postcard-perfect glacier views. March and November are shoulder seasons with fewer tourists and more dramatic lighting for photography. You'll get golden hour light that lasts for hours, perfect for capturing the glacier's blue ice against granite peaks. Avoid April through October unless you're an experienced cold-weather hiker. Winter brings snow, freezing temperatures, and limited daylight. Many boat operators shut down, and some trails become impassable.
