Garden Route in September

Good time to visit

September is a reasonable time to visit Garden Route.

All Months

October through April gives you the best weather and longest days, but also the biggest crowds and highest prices. December and January are South African summer holidays – everything books out and costs double. If you can swing it, visit in March or April when the weather's still warm but the crowds have thinned. May through September is technically winter, but temperatures rarely drop below 15°C during the day. It's the rainy season, which means lush forests and dramatic skies, but also means some outdoor activities get cancelled. Whale watching from Hermanus peaks between June and November. Here's what most guides won't tell you: the weather changes fast here. The mountains create microclimates, so it can be sunny in Knysna and raining in the Tsitsikamma forests 50 kilometers away. Pack layers and waterproof gear regardless of season. Wind is a factor year-round. The southeaster can blow for days, making beach time unpleasant and hiking challenging. Check wind forecasts before planning outdoor activities, especially if you're keen on water sports or the canopy tours. For the best balance of weather, prices, and availability, aim for late October through November or February through early March. You'll get warm days, fewer crowds than peak season, and accommodation that doesn't require a second mortgage.
