July brings the midnight sun and peak crowds, so arrive early at major sights or risk queuing behind three cruise ships worth of tourists. But here's what guidebooks won't tell you: September might be perfect. The summer crowds thin out, the autumn light turns those amber buildings absolutely golden, and restaurant terraces stay open until the first frost. Winter has its own magic — Christmas markets fill Stortorget from late November, and the medieval buildings look straight out of a Hans Christian Andersen story under snow.
