France in May
Good time to visit
May is a reasonable time to visit France.
All Months
May and September hit the sweet spot — warm enough for outdoor dining, cool enough to walk all day. Paris in May means chestnut blossoms along the Seine and café terraces finally reopening. September brings harvest season in wine regions and perfect light for photography.
Summer crowds pack major attractions but create energy in smaller towns. July brings lavender season to Provence and festival season everywhere else. Beach towns like Nice and Cannes charge peak prices but deliver peak atmosphere. Just book accommodations months ahead.
Winter transforms France into a different country. Paris museums have shorter lines, and Christmas markets in Strasbourg rival Germany's best. Ski season in the Alps runs December through April, with February offering the most reliable snow. But many Provence restaurants close entirely from November through March.
Spring arrives unevenly — cherry blossoms in Paris by April, while mountain regions stay cool into May. Fall colors peak in October, especially in Burgundy wine country. Both seasons offer moderate prices and locals who have time to chat.
