Eastern Kentucky in October
Great time to visit
October is one of the best months to visit Eastern Kentucky.
All Months
April through May brings wildflower season to Eastern Kentucky's mountains. Redbud and dogwood trees bloom along every back road, and hiking trails like those at Breaks Interstate Park explode with trillium and bloodroot. Temperatures hover in the 60s and 70s, perfect for exploring without sweating through your shirt. September and October deliver the fall foliage show that rivals New England but costs half as much. The maples on Pine Mountain turn fire-engine red, while the oaks go golden. October also brings harvest festivals and apple butter stirrings at places like the Kentucky Apple Festival in Paintsville. Summer gets humid and buggy, though swimming holes like the ones at Natural Bridge State Resort Park provide relief. Winter brings occasional snow that makes mountain driving treacherous, but also creates postcard scenes of log cabins and bare trees against gray skies. Most outdoor attractions close or reduce hours from December through February.
