September and October offer the best of both worlds. Water stays warm from summer heating, crowds thin dramatically after Italian schools restart, and you'll actually get sunset photos without strangers' heads in the frame. Winter Dalmatia is beautiful but sleepy. Many restaurants close, ferry schedules reduce to bare bones, but hotel rates drop 70%. Dubrovnik's walls in January fog create an otherworldly atmosphere.
