Crater Lake National Park in September

Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Crater Lake National Park.

All Months

July through September is prime time. The roads are clear, wildflowers bloom, and you can actually access the lake. But expect crowds and book accommodations months ahead. Late September into early October offers the sweet spot — fewer people, crisp air, and sometimes early snow dusting the rim. The changing aspen leaves add gold accents to all that blue. Just know that weather can turn quickly. Winter visits are possible but completely different. Only the south entrance stays open, and you'll need snowshoes or cross-country skis to reach viewpoints. The park loans snowshoes for free on weekends, and the snow-covered caldera creates an otherworldly scene. Avoid Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends if possible. Traffic backs up for miles, and parking lots fill by 9am. Midweek visits in late June or early September give you the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds. Sunrise and sunset are magical here, but dress warmly. Temperatures can drop 30 degrees once the sun disappears behind the rim.
