Cotswolds in December

Not the best time

December isn't ideal for Cotswolds. Consider a different month.

All Months

Late spring through early autumn offers the best weather and longest days, but each season has its merits. May brings bluebells carpeting ancient woodlands and lambs in the fields. The countryside explodes in green, and tourist numbers remain manageable. June and July deliver the warmest weather and longest days, perfect for evening walks and pub gardens. But this is also peak season — expect crowds, higher prices, and full car parks by mid-morning in popular villages. Book accommodation well ahead. September might be the sweet spot. Weather stays warm, autumn colors begin appearing, and the summer crowds thin out. Harvest season brings food festivals and the satisfaction of seeing the agricultural cycle complete. Winter has its own magic if you don't mind short days and occasional rain. Village pubs glow with firelight, and you'll often have famous viewpoints to yourself. Some attractions close or reduce hours, but the essential Cotswolds — the landscape and architecture — remains unchanged. Avoid bank holiday weekends unless you enjoy crowds. The villages can feel like theme parks when coach tours descend. Weekdays always offer a more authentic experience, especially Tuesday through Thursday when many day-trippers stay home. Weather can change quickly thanks to the elevation and exposed hilltops. Pack layers even in summer, and waterproof gear year-round. The Cotswolds gets about 30 inches of rain annually, spread fairly evenly across months.
