Connecticut in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit Connecticut.
All Months
Fall owns Connecticut. September through October brings peak foliage that transforms the Litchfield Hills into a postcard. The Merritt Parkway becomes a tunnel of gold and crimson, while towns like Kent and Cornwall look like movie sets. But everyone knows this — expect crowds and higher hotel rates.
Late spring hits the sweet spot. May and June offer mild weather, blooming gardens, and reasonable prices. The Connecticut River Valley explodes with mountain laurel (the state flower) in early June. Plus, you can actually get dinner reservations.
Summer brings beach season to the Connecticut coast. Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison offers two miles of sand, while smaller beaches in Westport and Greenwich cater to a more upscale crowd. Just know that Long Island Sound water stays chilly even in July.
Winter here is hit-or-miss. Snow can be beautiful in places like Litchfield, but coastal areas often get rain instead. The Garde Arts Center in New London and Hartford Stage keep culture alive during the cold months, and you'll have museums mostly to yourself.
Avoid March and April — mud season makes scenic drives less scenic, and many seasonal attractions stay closed.
