Charleston in January

Good time to visit

January is a reasonable time to visit Charleston.

All Months

Spring and fall own Charleston's calendar. March through May brings 70-80 degree days, blooming azaleas, and the Charleston Wine + Food Festival in March. October and November deliver the same perfect temperatures with fewer crowds and lower hotel rates. Summer means heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. July averages 89 degrees with 80% humidity — locals flee to the mountains or coast. But summer also brings cheaper accommodations and easier restaurant reservations. Plus, those afternoon storms cool things down for evening strolls. Winter rarely drops below 40 degrees, making it pleasant for walking tours and outdoor dining. December through February sees the fewest tourists and lowest prices. Holiday decorations make the historic homes even more photogenic. Avoid these dates unless you book far ahead: Spoleto Festival USA in late May/early June, Charleston Fashion Week in March, and any major University of South Carolina football weekend. Hotel rates triple and restaurants fill up.
