Carpathian Mountains in February
Not the best time
February isn't ideal for Carpathian Mountains. Consider a different month.
All Months
June through September offers the most reliable weather and full mountain access. July and August bring warm days perfect for high-altitude hiking, though mountain huts fill up fast – book ahead. September might be the sweet spot: cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and the forests explode in autumn colors that rival New England. But here's the catch – weather in the Carpathians changes fast. Even in summer, temperatures can drop below freezing at high elevations, and afternoon thunderstorms roll in without warning. The Transfăgărășan typically opens in late June and closes with the first serious snow, usually by November. Winter transforms the region into a different beast entirely – cross-country skiing and winter mountaineering become the main activities, but only for experienced mountain travelers. Spring arrives late, often not until May, and trails can remain muddy and unstable through early June. If you're here for wildlife watching, early morning and evening hours in any season offer the best chances of spotting bears, wolves, and lynx.
