Carlsbad Caverns in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit Carlsbad Caverns.
All Months
Spring and fall are your sweet spots here. March through May brings mild weather topside and fewer crowds in the cave. The desert wildflowers bloom in April if you get lucky with winter rains, turning the drive into the park into something special.
Summer is peak season for good reason – that's when the bats are most active. But it's also when temperatures hit 100°F on the surface, making the cool cave a relief rather than a shock. The trade-off is crowds. July weekends can feel like a parade through the Big Room.
Here's the thing about the bat program: it only runs from late May through October, and the best shows happen in August and September when the bat population peaks. If seeing the bat flight is your main goal, plan accordingly. But know that summer evenings can be brutally hot while you're waiting in the amphitheater.
Fall – September through November – gives you the best of both worlds. The bats are still active early in the season, temperatures are comfortable, and the summer crowds have gone home. October is particularly nice, with daytime highs in the 70s and cool evenings perfect for camping.
Winter visits work if you're just here for the cave. The underground temperature never changes, and you'll practically have the place to yourself. But the bat program shuts down, and the Chihuahuan Desert looks pretty bleak without its spring wildflowers.
