Cape Breton Highlands in April

Good time to visit

April is a reasonable time to visit Cape Breton Highlands.

All Months

September and early October deliver the park's finest moments. Fall colors peak around the last week of September, turning the highlands into a tapestry of reds and golds. Crowds thin out after Labour Day, but weather stays mild enough for comfortable hiking. Plus, this is peak whale watching season. Summer brings the warmest weather but also the biggest crowds and most persistent bugs. July and August see daytime temperatures around 20-25°C, perfect for hiking but expect company on popular trails. Book accommodations well in advance for summer visits. Late spring can be magical if you don't mind unpredictable weather. May and early June offer wildflower blooms and migrating birds, but trails might still have muddy sections from snowmelt. Some backcountry areas remain inaccessible until late May. Winter transforms the park into a different beast entirely. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing replace hiking, and the Cabot Trail stays open but requires winter tires. Only the hardiest visitors brave the highlands from December through March, but those who do get the place virtually to themselves. Avoid late October through November - this is when the park gets hit with the worst weather before winter settles in properly.
