May and September hit the sweet spot — mild weather, fewer crowds, and albergues aren't booked solid. April can be muddy and unpredictable, especially crossing the Pyrenees. October brings beautiful autumn colors but shorter days and potential rain in Galicia. Summer (June-August) means heat, crowds, and fully booked accommodations. The meseta, Spain's central plateau, becomes an oven in July. But summer also brings the best social atmosphere — the path buzzes with international pilgrims and evening celebrations. Winter walking is possible but challenging. Snow can close mountain passes, and many rural albergues shut down November through March. However, winter offers a contemplative experience with minimal crowds. Just pack serious weather gear and plan shorter daily distances. Holy Years (when July 25 falls on Sunday) draw massive crowds — 2027 is the next one. Book accommodations months in advance or avoid it entirely if you prefer solitude. Weather changes fast in the mountains, so pack layers regardless of season.
