Bhutan in December
Good time to visit
December is a reasonable time to visit Bhutan.
All Months
March through May brings rhododendron blooms and clear mountain views. Temperatures hit 70°F in valleys, though mornings stay crisp. This is peak season — book months ahead and expect crowds at major monasteries.
September to November offers the clearest skies of the year. Perfect for Tiger's Nest hikes and mountain photography. Temperatures drop to the 50s, but sunny days make up for chilly mornings. Harvest season means fresh apples and chilies in markets.
Avoid June through August unless you love leeches and fog. Monsoon rains turn trails into mud pits and hide mountain views behind clouds. Some remote areas become completely inaccessible.
Winter (December-February) works for budget travelers willing to bundle up. Fewer tourists, lower accommodation costs, and crystal-clear views of 24,000-foot peaks. But temperatures drop below freezing at night, and some high-altitude passes close due to snow.
Festivals happen year-round but Paro Tsechu (spring) and Thimphu Tshechu (fall) are the biggest. Masked dances, colorful costumes, and locals in their finest traditional dress. Book early — these events fill up hotels across the country.
