Bern in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit Bern.
All Months
May through September gives you Bern at its most alive. The Aare River warms enough for locals to float downstream from Thun — a uniquely Swiss summer ritual where office workers drift past medieval towers in their underwear. Restaurant terraces spill onto cobblestone squares, and the Saturday markets in Bundesplatz overflow with local produce.
July and August bring peak crowds and peak prices, but also the longest days. The sun doesn't set until after 9 PM, giving you extra hours to explore those winding streets. Just book accommodation early — Swiss summer holidays coincide with everyone else's.
Winter has its own magic if you can handle the cold. Christmas markets transform the old town into something from a fairy tale, complete with mulled wine steaming in medieval squares. But daylight ends by 5 PM, and some outdoor attractions close entirely.
April and October offer sweet spots — fewer tourists, decent weather, and lower hotel rates. The autumn colors along the Aare are spectacular, and spring brings those famous Swiss wildflowers to the surrounding hills.
