Apostle Islands in July
Great time to visit
July is one of the best months to visit Apostle Islands.
All Months
Summer brings the warmest weather and calmest waters, but also the biggest crowds. July and August see air temperatures in the 70s, though the lake rarely warms above 60°F. This is prime time for camping, kayaking, and hiking.
June offers a sweet spot with fewer crowds and wildflowers in full bloom. The water stays cold, but weather is generally stable for kayaking. Mosquitoes and black flies peak in June, so bring serious bug spray.
September delivers the best weather of the year. Crowds disappear after Labor Day, but temperatures stay comfortable through the month. Fall colors start showing in late September, and the lake often stays calm enough for kayaking into early October.
October brings spectacular fall colors but unpredictable weather. Some years offer warm, calm days perfect for hiking. Other years bring early snow and rough waters. Apple Festival happens the first weekend in October.
Winter transforms the islands into a frozen wilderness. When Lake Superior freezes, you can cross-country ski or snowshoe to some islands. Ice caves form along the mainland cliffs, creating magical blue grottos. But winter access depends entirely on ice conditions, which vary dramatically year to year.
Spring arrives slowly here. Ice often lingers into May, and cool temperatures persist through June. But spring migration brings incredible bird watching opportunities as warblers and other species pass through the islands.
