Alaska in June

Great time to visit

June is one of the best months to visit Alaska.

All Months

Summer owns Alaska tourism for good reason. June through August brings 18-22 hours of daylight, accessible roads, and wildlife activity. But crowds pack popular spots like Denali and cruise ship ports. July averages 65°F in Anchorage but can hit 80°F — pack layers because morning temperatures might be 45°F. August offers berry picking and fall colors starting in late month. September rewards brave visitors with northern lights season beginning, fewer crowds, and still-decent weather for hiking. The aurora borealis peaks from October through March, but winter means serious cold — Fairbanks averages -10°F in January. Many lodges and tour operators close October through April. Spring breakup in April and May turns roads muddy and limits access to remote areas. Here's what locals know: late August through early September offers the best of both worlds — manageable crowds, decent weather, and early aurora activity. But book accommodations early since many places close for shoulder seasons.
