La Playa
Quirky bohemian chic meets Spanish Colonial. Think award-winning gardens, antique-style wooden furniture, whimsical scalloped light fixtures, and custom dark-wood Barmoires. Laid-back but not at all shabby.

Why It Matters
One of California's oldest continuously operating hotels, renovated to HD Design Award-winning standards. Featured in Vogue, NY Times 'T List,' Travel + Leisure, Dezeen, and Condé Nast. The only hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea with a genuinely storied history — Steve Jobs reportedly unveiled the MacBook prototype here during an Apple retreat in 1983.
Built in 1905 as a seaside mansion by artist Christian Jorgensen for his wife Angela Ghirardelli — yes, that Ghirardelli — La Playa has been the 'Grande Dame of Carmel' for over a century. A $20 million renovation completed in Fall 2023 (led by design firm Post Company under Marc & Rose Hospitality) updated all 75 rooms and public spaces while keeping the Spanish Colonial bones intact: terracotta roof tiles, stained-glass windows, colorful ceramic stair risers, and courtyard fountains. The result is a hotel that feels genuinely historic rather than theme-park historic — with modern air conditioning finally added, a rarity in coastal Carmel.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The award-winning grounds feature multiple intimate patios, secluded courtyards, and landscaped garden paths. A legitimate attraction in their own right — these were the original Jorgensen estate gardens.
Oversized chess set in the gardens — a low-key but genuinely fun activity in the garden grounds.
Every room features a custom-fabricated Barmoire — warm rich wood with marble countertops and brushed brass finishes — stocked with specialty liquors and curated cocktail recipe cards. A nod to the manor parlour rooms of the early 20th century.
Over 6,000 sq ft of indoor and outdoor event space. Indoor spaces include the Pacific Room (opens to terrace, best for larger groups), Garden Room, and Fireside Room. Outdoor options include the main courtyard and arched patio colonnade. Accommodates events up to 200 attendees.
Tranquil outdoor pool with lounge chairs, framed by the award-winning gardens. Poolside Casita rooms open directly onto it. Secure a lounger early on sunny days.
Complimentary hotel shuttle around Carmel-by-the-Sea and within a 5-mile radius. Runs daily 5:00pm–11:00pm. Makes getting to dinner reservations easy in a town where parking is a genuine headache.

Freshly baked Ghirardelli chocolate chip cookies laid out at the front desk each evening after 9pm — a nod to the hotel's Ghirardelli family heritage.

Up to 2 pets per room allowed in designated pet-friendly rooms. One-time non-refundable fee of $250 USD. Pet-free rooms also available for allergy sufferers.
