Kokoda Track

Walk in the footsteps of wartime heroes

The Kokoda Track isn't just a hike. It's a 96-kilometer pilgrimage through Papua New Guinea's Owen Stanley Range, following the exact footsteps of Australian and Japanese soldiers who fought here in 1942. This isn't your typical nature walk – it's nine days of steep climbs, river crossings, and mud that'll test every muscle you didn't know you had. But here's what makes it special: you're walking through living history while local villagers share stories passed down from their grandparents who witnessed the campaign firsthand. The track connects Owers' Corner near Port Moresby to Kokoda village, crossing seven mountain ranges and countless streams. Expect to be challenged, humbled, and probably a bit emotional by the time you reach that final village.

The track officially starts at Owers' Corner, about 50 kilometers northeast of Port Moresby. You'll tackle nine distinct stages over eight nights, with each day bringing different challenges. Day one hits you with the steep climb up Imita Ridge – a 600-meter ascent that sets the tone. Templeton's Crossing on day three involves actual river crossings where you'll get your boots wet. The halfway point at Efogi village offers the best mountain views, but day six's descent into Kagi is where most people's knees start screaming. Brigade Hill on day seven is the emotional centerpiece – this is where some of the fiercest fighting happened. The final push to Kokoda village feels almost anticlimactic after everything you've been through, but that's where you'll find the small museum and the famous Kokoda sign everyone poses with.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book during shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) for lower operator prices and fewer crowds
  • 2.All-inclusive tour packages are actually better value than trying to organize independently
  • 3.Bring PNG Kina cash for village purchases and tips – most places don't accept cards
  • 4.Factor in Port Moresby accommodation costs for arrival/departure nights
  • 5.Travel insurance with trekking coverage is mandatory – don't cheap out on this
  • 6.Tip your guides and porters in cash at the end – budget around $200-300 total

Travel Tips

  • Start training at least 6 months before your trek with regular long hikes carrying a weighted pack
  • Break in your hiking boots completely before departure – blisters will end your trek early
  • Pack all electronics in waterproof cases – the humidity destroys everything
  • Bring more socks and underwear than you think you need – everything stays damp
  • Download offline maps to your phone as backup navigation
  • Learn some basic Tok Pisin phrases – locals appreciate the effort
  • Bring small gifts like pens or school supplies for village children
  • Pack a good first aid kit and know how to use it – you're far from medical help

Frequently Asked Questions

It's significantly harder than most people expect. The combination of steep terrain, high humidity, and muddy conditions makes it more challenging than popular treks like the Inca Trail or Kilimanjaro. The technical difficulty isn't extreme, but the sustained physical and mental challenge over nine days is intense.
