Milford Track

New Zealand's finest walk through pristine wilderness paradise

The Milford Track isn't just New Zealand's most famous hike — it's a 53-kilometer journey through some of the most untouched wilderness on Earth. Four days of walking takes you from Lake Te Anau through ancient rainforest, past towering waterfalls, and over the alpine Mackinnon Pass. But here's the thing: only 40 people can start the track each day during the hiking season, making this as exclusive as it is spectacular. The Department of Conservation calls it "the finest walk in the world," and after spending four days dodging sandflies and getting drenched by Sutherland Falls, you might just agree.

The Milford Track runs 53.5 kilometers from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point, and you'll walk it in exactly four days — no shortcuts, no rushing ahead. Day one covers 5 kilometers from Glade Wharf to Clinton Hut through beech forest alongside the Clinton River. It's an easy warm-up that gives your legs time to remember what hiking feels like. Day two stretches 16.5 kilometers from Clinton Hut to Mintaro Hut, following the Clinton Valley as mountains close in around you. The track stays relatively flat, but those 16 kilometers will feel longer than you expect. Day three is the big one: 14 kilometers from Mintaro Hut to Dumpling Hut, crossing the 1,154-meter Mackinnon Pass. The climb starts gradual then gets steep fast. But the views from the top — assuming the clouds cooperate — stretch across Fiordland's peaks and valleys. The descent brings you face-to-face with Sutherland Falls, a 580-meter cascade that'll soak you even from the viewing platform. Day four covers 18 kilometers from Dumpling Hut to Sandfly Point, mostly downhill through temperate rainforest. Your knees will feel every step, but the Arthur Valley's moss-covered trees and ferns make for a magical final day.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book your permit and transport together on July 1st when bookings open — waiting even a day can cost you hundreds in guided walk upgrades
  • 2.Pack all your own food rather than buying expensive supplies in Te Anau — grocery costs double in tourist towns
  • 3.Consider hiking in March or April for easier bookings and the same experience at peak season prices
  • 4.Rent quality rain gear in Queenstown if you don't own it — buying cheap gear that fails will cost more in the long run
  • 5.Book accommodation in Te Anau well in advance — last-minute hotel rates can hit NZ$300+ per night during hiking season

Travel Tips

  • Download the Department of Conservation app for offline track maps and hut information
  • Pack insect repellent with DEET — Fiordland sandflies are relentless and will ruin your trip if you're unprepared
  • Bring duct tape for gear repairs and blister prevention — the track's wet conditions are hard on equipment
  • Start each day early, especially the Mackinnon Pass crossing — afternoon weather deteriorates quickly
  • Test all your gear before arriving, especially waterproof items — there's nowhere to buy replacements on the track
  • Book your post-hike accommodation in Milford Sound or Te Anau before starting — you'll be too tired to search after four days hiking
  • Carry cash for the boat operators — some don't accept cards in remote locations
