Arlington
American heritage meets modern convenience near the capital
Arlington sits right across the Potomac from Washington DC, but it's far more than just a convenient place to crash after touring the monuments. This Virginia city packs serious American history into walkable neighborhoods, offers Metro access to the capital, and serves up everything from Pentagon tours to craft breweries. You'll pay less than staying in downtown DC while getting front-row seats to some of the nation's most important sites. The cherry blossoms bloom here too, minus the tourist chaos of the Tidal Basin.

Culture & Context
FEDERAL OUTPOST, LOCAL PRIDE
Arlington sits directly across the Potomac from Washington DC, connected by five bridges, and in 2026 it's impossible to separate the two. This is federal government territory. You will, genuinely, run into people who work at the Pentagon, lobbyists grabbing lunch in Clarendon, and Hill staffers on the Metro at 7am.
Amazon HQ2 has transformed National Landing into one of the region's most ambitious development stories, bringing a younger, tech-adjacent crowd into what used to be a quieter stretch of Crystal City. But here's the thing: Arlington also has a deeply local identity. It's the smallest self-governing county in the United States at just 26 square miles, and longtime residents are fiercely proud of it.
In 2026, the national mood adds another layer. It's America's 250th birthday, and Arlington, sitting next to the nation's most symbolic real estate, is leaning into that hard. Expect lots of flags, lots of ceremonies, and a summer that feels distinctly patriotic in a way most American cities don't quite pull off.
Local Customs
BRUNCH WARS, RESPECT MEMORIALS
Locals call the DC/Maryland/Virginia region 'the DMV' — it has nothing to do with getting your driver's license. If you use it in conversation, people will immediately know you're clued in.. Northern Virginia is universally called 'NOVA' (rhymes with 'sofa').
Saying 'Northern Virginia' in full will make you sound like a GPS.. The Metro is 'the Metro', not 'the subway'. Calling it the subway is a quick tell that you're from New York..
Arlington takes military memorials seriously. Keep your voice down at Arlington National Cemetery. The Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a real ceremony, not a photo op — watch it with the respect it deserves..
Brunch is a full culture here. Arlingtonians debate the best brunch spots with the intensity most people reserve for politics. Show up with an opinion and you'll make friends..
Jaywalking is common in Clarendon and Rosslyn, but be smart about it. The intersections near Metro stations get busy fast.. If you're going to Arlington National Cemetery, eat before you go.
There's no café inside, and the grounds are hilly and large — you'll want food in your system.. Tipping 20% is standard at sit-down restaurants. This is a high cost-of-living area and service workers know it.
Safety
GENUINELY VERY SAFE
Arlington is genuinely one of the safer urban areas on the East Coast. About 99% of its neighborhoods are graded A or B by crime analysts, and the overall crime rate sits below both Virginia state and national averages. Violent crime is low.
Property crime (theft, car break-ins) is more common, especially near Metro stations. Don't leave valuables visible in your car. At night, stick to well-lit streets and busy areas — which isn't hard since Clarendon, Ballston, and Rosslyn stay active late.
The Metro is safe, including after dark, though standard urban awareness applies. Arlington is considered safer than DC itself across the board. If something concerns you, the non-emergency line for Arlington County Police is (703) 228-4111.
Getting Around
METRO IS THE MOVE
Arlington has 11 Metro stations on the Orange, Silver, Blue, and Yellow lines, giving you fast access to most of DC and the broader region. Tap your contactless credit or debit card directly at the faregate — no SmarTrip card required, though you can buy one at any station if you prefer. Reagan National Airport (DCA) is inside Arlington, under 2 miles from Pentagon City — getting there from most neighborhoods is a 15-minute Metro ride.
For neighborhoods off the Metro, ART (Arlington Transit) buses cover the gaps with clean, climate-controlled routes. The new MICRO on-demand microtransit pilot runs in northwest Arlington via the Via app at $4.50 a ride — good for reaching Virginia Hospital Center, Westover, or East Falls Church Metro when regular buses don't work for your timing.
Capital Bikeshare has 400+ stations across the region. Driving into DC is generally not worth it: traffic across the Potomac bridges backs up fast, and parking in DC is expensive. The Metro is the move for anything inside the Beltway.
