Good to Know
Water Temperature & Wetsuit Strategy
April water temps are 75–78°F (24–26°C); a 3mm rashguard/spring suit is comfortable for 3+ hour sessions. Bring reef shoes for rocky access points and sea urchin protection.
Sunset Timing & Photography Strategy
Sunset times vary April–May: 7:15–7:25 PM depending on date. Golden hour begins 6:45 PM. Book dinner reservations for 7:30 PM minimum to avoid missing optimal evening light. Alternatively, plan activities finishing by 6:00 PM, then dedicate 45–60 minutes to photography location scouting before dinner.
Kiteboarding Wind Patterns & Booking Timing
Trade winds arrive consistently 11 AM–4 PM (April–May peak 1–3 PM). Early morning 7–10 AM often has lighter winds but clearer air. Book lessons immediately upon arrival to secure preferred instructors and time slots; last-minute cancellations are rare given demand.
Rental Equipment Quality & Booking Priorities
Book kiteboard, windsurfing, and scuba rental gear through Seaquest (primary vendor with world-class equipment maintenance). Independent operators have inconsistent maintenance standards. Book 48 hours in advance, especially April–May peak season.
Photography Backup Plans & Indoor Alternatives
April–May can bring occasional afternoon rain or cloud cover. Backup photography locations: Artisan workshops (indoor lighting), fish market (covered), local museums/cultural centers. Rainy-day alternatives: indoor cooking class, extended spa/massage, museum visits, culinary research at local markets.
Food Safety & Water Precautions
Bottled water only (available everywhere). Avoid ice from unknown sources; ask restaurants for ice from filtered water. Street food is generally safe if cooked fresh before your eyes (tacos, ceviche from busy stands). Upscale restaurants have reliable sanitation; always verify with locals.
Transportation Between Activities & Cost Optimization
Central Los Barriles is walkable for beach/restaurant clustering. Taxis are cheap ($3–8 between activity clusters). Pre-book multi-day tours to include transport. Uber/Didi available but inconsistent; agree on taxi fare before entering. Rent a car for Day 6–7 Sierra hike ($35–50/day) if independent hiking preferred.
Currency, Cards & Payment Logistics
Carry $300–500 USD equivalent in MXN pesos at all times. Primary ATM locations: Banco Invex (Main plaza), HSBC (central). Most restaurants accept cards but smaller establishments require cash. Tip 15–20% in restaurants; cash preferred. No card fees at major banks.
Your Weekend Itinerary
Kiteboarding Lesson – Advanced Progression
Book with Seaquest Kite School for a 3–4 hour advanced coaching session on foil boards or freestyle tricks. Conditions are typically best 10 AM–1 PM. Equipment included; bring rashguard and water shoes.
Beach Walk & Golden Hour Photography – Boca Vieja Lighthouse Area
30-minute sunset walk south toward the old fishing community and lighthouse structure. Dramatic rock formations, tide pools, and abandoned palapa structures create layered composition opportunities. Bring telephoto lens for wildlife photography (herons, frigatebirds).
Taco Stand La Cocina de Doña Carmen
Family-run taco stand open 6–11 AM serving warm flour tortillas, fresh carnitas, carne asada, and a standout breakfast pastor with caramelized pineapple. Communal plastic tables; arrive 6:45 AM before the rush.
Guided Scuba Diving – Reef Exploration (Intermediate certification required)
2–3 tank dive trip departing 8:00 AM with Seaquest Dive Center. Target sites: Las Ánimas, Canon Pulmo (if calm conditions), or reef edges with eagle rays and spotted eagle rays. Max depth 60 feet. Equipment rental available ($20–25).

Vera's Restaurant
Established upscale seafood spot with fresh catch daily: yellowtail ceviche, pan-seared snapper in cilantro broth, grilled dorado. Excellent wine list (Mexican and imported). Request a table on the patio overlooking the plaza.
