Zum Löwen
Historic design hotel with an art-collector's sensibility. Dark, moody interiors with exposed timber beams and original brick offset by contemporary furnishings and serious artwork. Feels like staying in a well-traveled friend's very well-decorated home — that happens to be 300 years old.
The Rooftop duplex rooms are in a separate building near the Pferdemarkt — they can only be booked by email, not via the online system
Why It Matters
One of the very few Design Hotels™ members in rural Lower Saxony. Owner Prof. Hans Georg Näder (of the Ottobock prosthetics group) drives a genuine art-and-design ethos throughout the property. The building dates to the late 17th century and received its neoclassical facade around 1850 — but nothing about the interior feels dusty.
A 300-year-old timber-framed guesthouse in the center of medieval Duderstadt that has been completely reimagined as a serious design hotel. Interior designer Anja Müller went bold — dark greens, purples, and browns throughout, handpicked furniture including pieces by Brazilian pioneer Sérgio Rodrigues, and original artwork on every wall (yes, including Andy Warhol Polaroids). It's a Design Hotels™ member sitting 30 minutes east of Göttingen, which makes it genuinely good value for what you actually get: a full spa with an emerald pool, a proper regional restaurant, and rooms that feel considered.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel functions partly as a gallery space. Works throughout the building include Andy Warhol Polaroids and pieces from various international designers and artists. No guided tour is formally offered — it's a built-in part of the guest experience.
The restaurant offers a Chef's Choice tasting menu in 3-course (€52), 4-course (€59), and 5-course (€69) formats, with optional wine pairing. A proper evening experience without leaving the hotel.
The surrounding Eichsfeld region offers trails and cycling routes. The hotel can provide local advice at reception.
The hotel's fitness offering is built around the Milonzirkel — a structured circuit training system. Included in spa access for all guests.
The hotel specifically recommends walking the full circuit of Duderstadt's medieval town walls with dogs (and without). The walls are intact and walkable, encircling the old town right where the hotel sits.
