Sonop
1920s British colonial explorer camp — theatrical, antique-filled glamping with extraordinary production values. Think Out of Africa meets Downton Abbey, dropped into one of the world's most ancient deserts.
Fly in by small plane — the 6-hour drive is an adventure, but landing at your own private desert airstrip is a properly cinematic arrival
Why It Matters
Namibia's only three-Michelin-Key property and one of the most architecturally audacious desert lodges on the planet — 10 canvas tents perched on granite boulders, connected by winding boardwalks. Green Globe certified and fully solar-powered. The dinner experience alone (7.5-metre communal table, candleabras, white-gloved service) is unlike anything else in Africa.
Zannier Sonop is a 10-tent desert lodge constructed directly on top of giant granite boulders in the remote Hardap region of southern Namibia. The whole aesthetic is a 1920s British explorer camp — four-poster beds, antique trunks, brass telescopes, billiards in the bar, and butlers serving five-course gala dinners by candlelight. It sits on 13,800 private acres on the edge of NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of the largest private conservation areas in southern Africa, and is the only property in Namibia awarded three Michelin Keys.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A 2.5-hour sunset drive in Land Cruisers, timed for the desert's reawakening after midday siesta. Stops for sundowners at a carefully chosen viewpoint as the sun kisses the horizon. Gin and tonics, Sauvignon Blanc, and the first stars of the evening included.
A 2.5-hour guided excursion at sunrise in bespoke Land Cruisers with bucket seats and dustproof gear storage. Expert guides reveal the desert's ecology — sociable weaver colonies in their massive communal nests, quiver trees, San Bushmen's caves, beetle life on the desert floor. Participation confirmed at dinner the night before.
A premium bespoke experience: 7:30am departure, guided drive to the dune, hike to the apex for 360° views, then a private chef-prepared breakfast à la minute under a Camelthorn Acacia — starched linens, silverware, crystal, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a bottle of champagne. One of the lodge's signature moments.
Self-guided e-bike trails departing at your own time. Two routes: a white easy route along the red dune and back down the ancient river course, or the longer orange route bordering NamibRand Nature Reserve. E-bikes available on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the day.
Bespoke helicopter rides over the desert and surrounding wilderness. Arranged by the concierge team.
A 30-minute guided horse ride from the lodge's own stables. Horses selected for their temperament and suitability to the terrain. Trails ascend red sand dunes, follow ancient riverbeds lined with Acacia Erilobas trees, and pass the world's largest sociable weaver nests. Private lessons available for all skill levels. Included in the all-inclusive rate.
A private hot air balloon safari over the Namib Desert at sunrise, offering panoramic views of the dunes and plains. Bookable through concierge — additional cost.
Two-hour guided walking trails in the cooler early morning or late afternoon. Expert guides point out desert geology, insect life, cave paintings, and the San Bushmen tools left in granite boulder formations. Dress for variable temperatures and stay hydrated.
A 45-minute group yoga session designed for novices and experienced practitioners alike. Usually held near the pool at sunrise or sunset. Book with Reception — on demand.
A 4.5-metre wide HD screen by the pool with Bose surround sound. Classic films — Out of Africa, Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion King, Titanic, Madagascar — screened every second evening, weather permitting. Homemade popcorn (salted, buttered, or caramelised) included. Runs in multiple languages with optional subtitles.
Every tent has a telescope on its private terrace. NamibRand Nature Reserve, practically adjacent to the lodge, is one of Africa's designated Dark-Sky Reserves. Staff also provide routes and guidance for dedicated stargazing sessions.
