Why It Matters
Named one of Travel + Leisure's 100 Best New Hotels in the World in 2024. Every suite is individually designed by Maldonado herself, and nearly every object is for sale. The invisible service model — contactless check-in, text-only staff contact — makes it feel genuinely unlike staying at a hotel.
YOWIE is a 13-suite boutique hotel built above a design shop and café in two converted rowhouses on South Street, Queen Village. Founded in 2016 by Philadelphia native Shannon Maldonado as a homewares boutique, it grew into a full hospitality concept that opened its hotel floors in 2023. The building has a classic brick exterior, but inside it's all Maldonado: colorful, eclectic, and deeply personal, with every piece of furniture and art shoppable through the ground-floor store.

Suite 101 – Accessible Hideaway Studio
Ground-floor ADA-accessible studio with an open-concept layout. The only pet-friendly room at YOWIE. Full culinary kitchen with oven, range, full refrigerator, and a dining table that seats four. Roll-in shower, lowered sink, and grab bars. Wright queen mattress, accent chair by Normann Copenhagen, and original artwork throughout.

Suite 201 – One Bedroom King
Separate bedroom layout gives real privacy — the living room with a chubby Normann Copenhagen sofa and kitchenette is one space, the bedroom another. Bay windows pour in natural light. Lime green bathroom adds a bold pop. Wright king mattress. Good pick for couples who want an apartment feel without an open-plan room.

Suite 202 – Sunny Double Queen
A sunlit room with two queen beds — one of the few multi-bed options at YOWIE, good for friends traveling together or those needing extra sleeping space. Design-forward finishes throughout.
Double QueenSuite 203 – Iconic Corner King
Open-concept corner studio on the second floor. Three sets of windows on two sides, so natural light all day. Sculptural sofa by Audo, bistro table for two, and a kitchenette with a locally-made prep table. Purple accent walls, blue-tiled bathroom, and original artwork. One of the most popular rooms in the building.
KingSuite 204|205 – Two Bedroom Suite
Two connecting suites forming a two-bedroom configuration, ideal for families or groups of up to four. Combines a king bedroom and a queen bedroom with shared living and kitchen spaces. Can also be booked as individual Suite 204 or Suite 205.
King + QueenSuite 206 – Hideaway King
A quieter, more tucked-away king suite with a distinctly playful design — orange accent chair, stone-like table, and bold artwork. Marked as pet-friendly alongside Suite 101. Good option for those wanting a more private feel within the hotel.
KingSuite 301 – One Bedroom King
Third-floor one-bedroom suite with a separate bedroom and living area. Striped black-and-white sofa, blue painting, and a red wine-colored accent chair. Similar layout to Suite 201 but with different design personality. Egyptian cotton sheets, Wright king mattress.

Suite 302 – Sunny Study King
Named for its well-lit work-friendly setup. A study area makes this one of the better picks for remote workers. Wood bed frame, colorful artwork, and small red nightstand. Bright and creative atmosphere.
KingSuite 303 – Iconic Corner King
Third-floor mirror of Suite 203 — same corner position, windows on three sides, open layout. Hand-drawn landscape wallpaper by Pierre Frey adds warmth without dominating. Green sofa, blue carpet, small dining nook, kitchenette. Another guest favorite, especially for couples. Views of both South Street and American Street.
KingSuite 304|305 – Corner Two Bedroom Suite
Third-floor two-bedroom configuration in a corner position. Combines Suite 304 and Suite 305, offering more space and light than the second-floor equivalent. Silver refrigerator, marble kitchen counter, and wood dining table.
King + QueenSuite 305 – Queen Studio
Compact queen studio on the third floor. Small window, black nightstand, and a picture on the wall. One of the more affordable room types — tighter on space but the same design DNA as the rest of the property.
QueenSuite 306 – Hideaway King
Third-floor counterpart to Suite 206 — a more private, tucked-away king studio. Marked as pet-friendly. Yellow playful stamp detailing, double bed with white sheets, small window with plant.

YOWIE regularly hosts monthly events, pop-ups, artist exhibitions, and creative collaborations. Follow @helloyowie on Instagram for upcoming events. These are open to guests and the neighborhood.
Every suite is individually designed with original artwork and curated pieces from independent artists and heritage makers. Guests can purchase items directly from their room — furniture, art, ceramics, and objects are all shoppable through the YOWIE shop.
A curated design shop on the ground floor selling home goods, art objects, ceramics, gifts, and collaborations with independent makers. Everything in the hotel rooms is shoppable — if you love something in your suite, check the shop downstairs. Named Bon Appétit's 'Coolest Shop in Philadelphia' in 2019.
