Xitan Hotel Beijing
Oriental zen retreat meets Japanese garden philosophy — traditional Chinese courtyard architecture with interiors influenced by Japanese aesthetics. Serene, meditative, and deliberately quiet. Think stone walls, cascading waterfalls, ancient pine trees, and mountain views from your bedroom window.

Why It Matters
The only Relais & Châteaux property in northern China. Built on a Ming-dynasty village site after an eight-year restoration, designed by Japanese firm Nikken Sekkei with landscape master Kanji Nomura. Every room has a private hot spring pool drawn from Mentougou's underground springs. The on-site restaurant, The House of Rong, carries the Xin Rong Ji brand — the only Michelin three-star Chinese culinary brand in mainland China.
Xitan opened in May 2022 on the site of the ancient Yangpoyuan village in Beijing's western mountains — and it took eight years to get there. The property sits roughly a kilometer from the 1,700-year-old Tanzhe Temple, about an hour's drive from the city center. Thirty-eight rooms are spread across 10 poetically named courtyards, with traditional courtyard architecture on the outside and a sharp, contemporary interior sensibility inside. It's adults-only, intentionally remote, and genuinely unlike anything else near Beijing.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Hotel offers airport pickup and drop-off services. Recommended given the remote mountain location.
The hotel grounds themselves are an attraction — 17 courtyards over a 21,000 sqm site, with two waterfalls (Otaki Fall and Medaki Fall), ancient pine trees, a 'snowflake' stone arrangement, and hexagonal natural stones sourced from Inner Mongolia. The east terrace 'moon-viewing platform' sits above a floating water basin. The landscape was designed by Kanji Nomura, a leading Japanese garden master.
Private KTV facilities available for guests.
A dedicated THX-certified private cinema on-site. One of the more unusual amenities for a boutique mountain resort.
A dedicated meditation space positioned in the hotel's Zen courtyard, designed to promote quiet contemplation. Dappled afternoon light passes through curtains to illuminate the space. The courtyard's massive stones invite stillness.
The 1,700-year-old Tanzhe Temple is roughly 1km from the hotel — the oldest recorded Buddhist site in Beijing. Locals say 'First came Tanzhe Temple, then came Beijing.' Worth visiting at dawn before other tourists arrive.
Fitness classes available on-site, including yoga sessions.
