White River Cottages
Eco-conscious, rustic-minimalist. Think hobbit-house charm: wonky stone walls, old stable doors with massive iron keys, domed ceilings, built-in sofas, and terraces wrapped in jasmine and lemon trees. No frills, no fuss — but thoughtfully done and immaculately maintained.
Book your specific cottage if you can — they vary quite a bit; some have sea views, some are more private than others.
Why It Matters
One of the earliest slow-tourism / ecotourism properties in Greece, operating since 1991 before it was fashionable. Listed on Tablet Hotels. The cottages were genuinely derelict olive-farmer shelters abandoned for ~80 years before restoration. Strong repeat-guest culture; many visitors return annually. Solar-heated water, composting, water-saving fittings throughout.
Thirteen stone cottages scattered through the Aspros Potamos Valley in the far southeast corner of Crete, about 900 metres from the sea. The property has been running since 1991 — the passion project of local owner Vangelis Mavrakis, who rescued a cluster of abandoned olive-farmer shelters and turned them into something genuinely special. Rustic minimalist interiors with stone floors, beamed ceilings, exposed rock faces built into the walls, and a wonderful 100m² pool at the heart of the hamlet.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Available through the property. Strongly recommended given the remote location and the density of day-trip options: Vai palm beach, Toplou Monastery, the Minoan palace at Kato Zakros, Sitia, and multiple mountain villages.
Several other gorge walks of varying difficulty are accessible by car from the property. The Perivolakia gorge is a local favourite. Reception provides maps and tips.
The trail to Pefki village starts literally at the edge of the property. A leisurely 2-hour walk up through the gorge leads to the village of Pefki, where you can have lunch and visit the folk museum and caves. Two route options: through the gorge or above it. Return the same day.
A weekly market in the village (1km walk) with fresh local produce — ideal for stocking the well-equipped cottage kitchen. One of the best ways to eat well and cheaply in self-catering mode.
Makrigialos Beach is a 15-minute walk (1km). Several quieter and more secluded beaches are reachable by car or bike. The waters in this part of southeast Crete are notably clean.
A 100m² outdoor pool at the centre of the hamlet, with sunbeds and umbrellas. Guests consistently call it the highlight of the property — it's large by boutique-property standards and the stone surrounds blend with the landscape. Pool towels available on request.
Toplou Monastery (~40km northeast) supplies the property's house red and white wine, which are left in cottages for guests. The monastery itself offers wine tastings — a worthwhile day-trip destination.
