Why It Matters
A Relais & Châteaux member since 2020, this nationally protected monument is the only property of its kind in Gouda. Its restaurant LIZZ* holds a Michelin star — the only one in the region — and the design story rooted in Gouds Plateel pottery heritage is genuinely distinctive. The building itself, adjacent to the historic Jerusalem Chapel, overlooks the St. Janskerk stained-glass windows (UNESCO) and the 1438 Town Hall.
A 16th-century orphanage-turned-boutique-hotel right in the heart of Gouda, a short walk from the cheese market and the stained-glass windows of Sint Janskerk. Owners Sharon and Lennart van Gastel spent years restoring this national monument, keeping the old vaults, timber ceilings, and stone details intact while interior designer Judith van Mourik layered in a bold, graphic aesthetic inspired by the local Gouds Plateel pottery tradition. The result is 25 rooms and suites that feel genuinely eccentric — not hotel-generic. Add a Michelin-starred restaurant and a cocktail bar that actually makes you want to linger, and Gouda stops being a day trip and becomes a proper destination.

COCO's thematic afternoon tea is a seasonal rotating experience prepared by the in-house patisserie team. Sweet and savory treats, styled to a theme. It has become a signature activity for the hotel and is regularly sold out — book in advance.
A rotating seasonal cocktail-making experience at bar COCO. Your table becomes a mini cocktail lab: fresh ingredients, tubes of bespoke mixers, professional tools, crushed ice, and decorative garnishes. Each edition features a new signature cocktail — spring 2026 launched with a Signature Mimosa (orange, vanilla, vodka). Also available as a Mocktail Lab for baby showers and non-drinkers. The Weeshuis is a sought-after wedding venue, with the historic building, Jerusalem Chapel adjacency, and atmospheric courtyard all forming natural backdrops. The hotel has two meeting rooms (70 sqm combined), private dining options, and full-service event coordination. In-room champagne service is also available.
The hotel offers complimentary bikes for guests (included in certain packages like Sleep Sunday). Gouda's historic center is highly walkable and cyclable, with the Reeuwijkse Plassen nature reserve about 10 minutes by bike. The wider Green Heart polder landscape — windmills, dikes, meadows — is easily accessible on two wheels.
