Wattura sits on a thin strip of land between Waikkal Beach — sunset-facing, Indian Ocean — and the quiet Gin Oya river estuary. The name means 'water' in Sinhalese, which tells you everything about the design philosophy here. Tropical modernist architecture runs throughout: polished concrete and stone offset against richly figured wood and traditional craftsmanship. It's barely an hour north of Colombo, 20km from Bandaranaike Airport, but it genuinely feels like you've gone somewhere far away.
