Villa Magnolia
Warm, slightly grand, slow-travel. Art Nouveau bones with box-spring beds and Nespresso machines. Feels like staying in a carefully tended private home rather than a hotel. The owner's background in luxury Asian resorts shows in the quality of service and food sourcing, not in slickness.
Book a room in the Villa or the farmhouse 't Hof Janse to have breakfast included in the rate — studios and holiday homes must add it separately
Why It Matters
Listed in both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Ranked #1 in Oostkapelle on TripAdvisor. The breakfast alone — local and vegetarian, served in a glass orangery housing a custom Royal Delft Delft Blue vase made exclusively for Villa Magnolia — draws consistent raves. Green Key certified for sustainability.
A 1910 Art Nouveau villa turned family-run estate on the Walcheren coast of Zeeland. The Troy family has owned it since 1984 and the second generation — owner Jerry Troy, formerly Deputy GM at Six Senses Samui — runs it with a hospitality philosophy rooted in the ancient Greek concept of Xenia. The estate has grown well beyond the original villa to include a converted farmhouse ('t Hof Janse), self-catering studios, and standalone holiday homes, all set on 4.5 hectares of gardens with a pond and tea house.

How you'll actually spend your days.
On-site badminton available for guests.
Villa Magnolia rents city bikes and electric bikes directly from the property. The Walcheren peninsula is one of the best cycling regions in the Netherlands — flat, with dedicated paths through dunes, forests, and along the coast. Middelburg is a comfortable ride. Ask in advance for children's bikes, tricycles, or tandems and they'll have them ready. Covered bike storage also available for guests who bring their own.
The team actively helps guests plan evenings out — securing restaurant reservations, theatre tickets, concert tickets. Staff know the region extremely well and have personal recommendations across the Walcheren peninsula.
The estate covers 4.5 hectares with an English garden, pond, tea house, and multiple terrace seating areas. Strolling the grounds — especially in spring when the magnolias bloom — is a genuine attraction in itself.
The Manteling forest and dune nature reserve is about 20 minutes on foot from the villa. Staff tip: walk through the woods to the beach or Domburg and you may spot deer and peacocks. The Oranjezon nature reserve, another protected dune area with five marked walking routes, is also recommended by staff.
