Villa Lara
Contemporary-classic French elegance. Think Moissonnier cabinetry, marble bathrooms, 100% cotton satin sheets, and historically inspired modern art — but without any stuffiness. Chic and casual. Privately owned, so it feels personal rather than corporate.
Ask for a room facing the cathedral — the illuminated view at night is worth requesting specifically.
Why It Matters
The only 5-star hotel in Bayeux and consistently ranked #1 of all hotels in the city on TripAdvisor. Michelin Guide selected. Location is genuinely hard to beat — cathedral views from every room, Bayeux Tapestry a 2-minute walk, and D-Day excursions departing from the door. The Villa Augustine presidential suites, at 218 sqm each inside a 19th-century historic building, are exceptional for families or groups.
Villa Lara is a privately owned 5-star boutique hotel sitting directly across from Bayeux Cathedral on the quiet Place du Québec. It opened in 2012 and expanded in 2019 with the adjacent Villa Augustine, a lovingly restored 19th-century building that houses four enormous presidential suites. The whole operation runs on 32 rooms and a lot of personality — the staff knows your name by day two, the minibars are complimentary, and the D-Day tour buses pick up literally outside the front door.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel is the designated pickup point for multiple D-Day beach tour operators — the buses stop right outside the front door. Staff are well-versed in arranging and recommending tours to Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the American Cemetery, and other WWII sites across Normandy, typically about 10km away.
A 30-minute guided city tour aboard an authentic Piaggio (a classic Italian three-wheeler), driven by a hotel guide who takes you through Bayeux's paved back streets and medieval buildings — the parts most visitors walk right past. It's a genuinely enjoyable and slightly quirky way to get oriented in the city.
An in-hotel shop open daily selling primarily 'made in France' souvenirs, gifts, and art. The hotel doubles as a small gallery — paintings, papier-mâché busts, and select furniture pieces throughout the property are all available for purchase. Reception staff are happy to advise on their personal favourites.
