Villa Il Poggiale
Aristocratic Tuscan country house — antique armoires, four-poster beds, canopy beds in hand-woven fabrics, walls painted in natural earth pigments. Warm, unhurried, and genuinely family-run. No elevator, plenty of stairs, and rooms that all feel distinct from each other.
Drive into the garden to drop off luggage before parking outside — the entrance is easy to miss if you park on the street first
Why It Matters
Listed as an official 'Historical Residence' of Italy, with documented noble provenance back to 1408. The Corsini family connection is real — their name appears throughout Italian Renaissance history. The current owners, the Vitta brothers, converted their own summer home into this hotel, and staff still refer to rooms by the names of family members who slept in them.
A 15th-century Renaissance villa in the Chianti Classico hills, about 15 km south of Florence. The Corsini family — one of Florence's great noble dynasties — purchased it in 1408, and it eventually passed to the Vitta family after WWII, who converted it into a hotel. The stone exterior, frescoed ceilings, original coach house, courtyard well, and molded crystal chandeliers are all still intact. It runs more like a family home with 24 guest rooms than a polished hotel chain, and that's exactly the point.
