Why It Matters

One of the earliest boutique properties in this part of Tuscany to break from the wax-museum villa standard. Featured on Tablet Hotels and highlighted by Condé Nast Traveler. Owned and operated by the same Anglo-Italian team for 20+ years, giving it a consistency and personal warmth that larger properties can't replicate.

Villa Fontelunga is a 9-room Padronale residence above the Val di Chiana that plays against type. The owners — a mix of English and Italian friends — have stripped out the frescoes-and-antiques playbook entirely. Traditional Tuscan antiques sit alongside Philippe Starck and Arne Jacobsen pieces, terra cotta floors run under oversize damask headboards, and the whole thing feels less like a hotel and more like staying at a very stylish friend's house. The views toward Cortona across 200 olive trees are genuinely stunning — quieter and more understated than Chianti, and that's the entire point.

Where You'll Stay

4 room types available

Classic
Double

Classic

On the first and second floors of the main villa, with double aspect views over the gardens. These are the entry-level rooms — at 16 sqm they're genuinely compact, but classically proportioned and individually styled. Each takes its name and colour palette from a precious material (think soft oro tones or calming turchese). Two rooms can be made up as twins.

Double

Deluxe

Situated on the first and second floors of the main villa, the Deluxe rooms step up to double aspect views over both the valley and the gardens — the valley side is markedly better. The en-suite bathroom features double basins. Each room is individually styled around a precious material theme.

Junior Suite

Junior Suite — Diamante

The standout option: a private separate cottage next to the main villa. Ground floor with its own garden and terrace overlooking the valley. The separation from the main house gives it genuine privacy and a 'little home' feel. The en-suite has both a separate bath and a shower. Best for honeymoons or anyone who wants a bit more breathing room.

Double

Superior

The largest rooms in the main villa, also on the first and second floors. Superior rooms have double aspect views over both the valley and gardens, and the bigger footprint gives them a noticeably more comfortable feel. En-suite bathroom with double basins and bath/shower. Still individually styled with the same vintage-meets-modern design philosophy.
