Villa d'Este
Old-world Italian grand hotel. Think frescoed ceilings, antique furnishings, formal service, and impeccably dressed staff. Not a boutique or a design hotel — it is unapologetically palatial. The kind of place where guests dress for dinner and the concierge remembers your name.
Request a lake-view room in the Queen's Pavilion for romantic balconies and pastel interiors — the pavilion's red trompe-l'oeil facade is instantly recognizable from the water.
Why It Matters
One of the most storied hotels in the world. First guest in 1873 was publisher Giovanni Ricordi, who brought Verdi and Puccini. The legendary floating pool — added in 1966 — is one of the most photographed hotel amenities in Italy. Since 1929 the estate hosts the Concorso d'Eleganza, the world's premier vintage car concours. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
Built in 1568 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and opened as a hotel in 1873, Villa d'Este is one of the oldest grand hotels in continuous operation in Europe. The estate spans two historic residences — the Cardinal's Building and the Queen's Pavilion — plus four private villas, all set within a ten-hectare botanical park on the western shore of Lake Como. Rooms start at €1,150 per night and climb to €13,500 for Villa Cima. This is old-world European grandeur done without apology.
