Why It Matters
One of the most storied hotels in the world. First guest in 1873 was publisher Giovanni Ricordi, who brought Verdi and Puccini. Built in 1568 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio and opened as a hotel in 1873, Villa d'Este is one of the oldest grand hotels in continuous operation in Europe. The estate spans two historic residences — the Cardinal's Building and the Queen's Pavilion — plus four private villas, all set within a ten-hectare botanical park on the western shore of Lake Como.
