Villa Clarisse
Oysters and cloisters — near-monochrome interiors (white floors, walls, curtains and wooden furniture) punctuated by antiques sourced from local dealers, maritime blue accents, and the kind of unhurried discretion that doesn't need to announce itself.
Book through the hotel directly for a property access code — Saint-Martin harbor closes to cars in high season, and you'll need it.
Why It Matters
The birthplace of 19th-century French general Ferdinand Auguste Lapasset, the villa is the sole hotel on France's Atlantic coast with a dedicated butler service. Owner Didier Le Calvez was knighted for his career in hospitality. It is a small, serious property: nine rooms, no restaurant, and absolute quiet in the middle of one of France's most fashionable islands.
Villa Clarisse is a nine-room former 18th-century mansion tucked into the cobbled lanes of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, the island of Île de Ré's principal port town just off France's Atlantic coast. Owned and run by Didier Le Calvez — former GM of the Four Seasons George V in Paris, and one of France's most decorated hoteliers — and his wife Olivia, the villa is the first member of the Once in a Lifetime hotel collection. It is intimate to the point of feeling like a private home: interior design by Pierre-Yves Rochon, a 1,000 sqm garden landscaped by Louis Benech, a full butler service, and a self-serve honesty bar stocked with the owners' own Château Clarisse wine.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel provides bicycles for guests' use. Île de Ré is entirely flat and has a well-marked network of cycle paths through salt marshes, vineyards, pine forest and along the coast. Every few kilometers there are oyster shacks and small beaches to stop at.
Villa Clarisse has a partnership with YooToo, one of the island's best bike-rental shops. Book through the hotel and receive 10% off push bikes or e-bikes, with or without baskets.
The island offers dinghy sailing, catamaran sailing, canoeing, wakeboarding, paddle-boarding and fishing, typically arranged through local operators.
The 1,000 sqm garden, designed by landscape architect Louis Benech, features palm trees, fig trees and laurels around the former cloister, with the heated outdoor pool at the far end. Pool is open end of April through end of September, maintained at 26°C.
A 9-hole golf course is on Île de Ré (Trousse-Chemise, approximately 15 km away), and an 18-hole course is available at La Rochelle.
The entire villa can be booked exclusively from November to March, accommodating up to 20 people across all 9 rooms. Includes VIP welcome amenities in each room, heated pool access, fireplace, and daily housekeeping. Available on request.
