Why It Matters
Michelin Key 2025 holder and Condé Nast Traveler #3 Resort in the Northeast (2023). Hosted two landmark NAACP Amenia Conferences (1916 and 1933). Henry David Thoreau's last letter was written to a Troutbeck resident. The Champalimaud-designed renovation won the 2019 AHEAD Award for Best Hotel Renovation in the Americas.
Troutbeck is a 250-acre estate hotel in Amenia, NY — two hours from Manhattan by car or train — with a history that reads like a survey course in American literature and civil rights. The Manor House (c.1919) and Benton Cottage (c.1770) hosted everyone from Thoreau and Emerson to W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, and Thurgood Marshall. A 2016 acquisition and full renovation by acclaimed Champalimaud Design brought serious polish without erasing what makes the place irreplaceable. Today's 37 individually designed rooms, a farm-sourced restaurant open to the public, Wildsmith spa treatments in the timber-clad Barns, and two US Open-surface tennis courts make it one of the most complete retreats in the Northeast.
