Fiore Hotel Masseria
Designer former fort — rustic-luxe masseria with an eclectic mix of historical artifacts and contemporary interiors. Calm, unhurried and genuinely family-run.
Ask owner Mariana Giannone for her hand-annotated map of Pisticci — she's marked the best antique shop, cheese spots and local cafés
Why It Matters
One of the very few upscale options in Basilicata, and likely the best. The Giannone family built it with their own history in mind — the suites incorporate symbolic details referencing the Ottoman invasions and local farming life. The restaurant sources hyper-locally, including ricotta from a sixth-generation local cheesemaker. Tablet Hotels member. Featured in the New York Times.
A 16th-century fortified farmhouse turned 13-suite boutique hotel, sitting on a hill in deepest Basilicata with views toward the Ionian Sea and the hilltown of Pisticci. Originally built as a military outpost against Turkish invasions, it was bought by the Canadian-Italian Giannone family and lovingly converted. What started as a family vacation home became something much better. Every suite is different, decorated with antiques and regional artifacts — cow bells, antique keys, stirrups hung from stable walls — alongside contemporary design pieces. It's relaxed, it's personal, and there is nowhere else quite like it in southern Italy.
