Why It Matters
Albergo diffuso is a certified Italian hospitality model where an entire village becomes the hotel. Torre del Nera is one of the more polished examples — it has a real spa (not just a sauna room), a restaurant serving truffle-heavy Umbrian cuisine, and each apartment is individually styled using salvaged materials from the original 12th-century buildings. It's 15 minutes from Spoleto, in black truffle country.
Torre del Nera is a rare thing: a whole medieval village that functions as a single hotel. The central tower (12th century, hence the name) houses 12 rooms, the restaurant, and a proper 400 sqm spa. Then the remaining 16 apartments are scattered across the cobblestoned lanes of Scheggino, each named after a historical family from the village and carrying their coat of arms. You leave your car at the free parking lot at the foot of the village — a golf cart whisks you up. From there, it's all stone alleys, wood-beamed ceilings, and terracotta floors. The Giannattasio family, who transformed Scheggino from a depressed, earthquake-affected hamlet into this project, still runs it today.
