Torre de Palma Wine Hotel
Rural luxury wine estate. Whitewashed walls, beamed wooden ceilings, thick stone, antique furniture mixed with contemporary design. Each room has its own distinct palette and character — some azulejo-blue and white, others moody and dark with gilded chandeliers. Equal parts gentleman's farm and boutique design hotel.

Why It Matters
One of very few hotels in Europe built atop the ruins of a 14th-century manor and adjacent to 1st-century Roman villa ruins. The on-site winery produces seven estate varietals using marble presses and traditional artisanal methods. The hotel sits in a Dark Sky Reserve — stargazing from the ancient tower is genuinely extraordinary. And the Lusitano horse riding center adds an experience you simply can't replicate elsewhere.
A five-star wine estate hotel on a whitewashed agricultural estate that dates to 1338, Torre de Palma sits deep in upper Alentejo countryside about 10 minutes from Monforte town and two hours from Lisbon. Former pharmacists Ana Isabel and Paulo Barradas Rebelo opened it in 2014, turning the property into a working winery, equestrian center, and hotel with just 19 rooms. Architect João Mendes Ribeiro kept the bones of the original estate intact and added contemporary concrete-and-masonry structures in keeping with the vernacular, while interior designer Rosarinho Gabriel filled the rooms with handpicked vintage furniture, antiques, and locally woven textiles.

Hands-on sessions in the estate's organic vegetable garden, exploring how produce is grown and harvested for the restaurant kitchen.

Guided tour of Torre de Palma's boutique winery, which produces seven estate varietals using small marble presses and traditional artisanal techniques. Tastings conducted in the cellar, with views of wine barrels and the production area. Oenologist Duarte Deus oversees the wines.
The estate has a full riding center with stables and a riding arena. Guests can take riding lessons, venture out on horseback through the vineyards and surrounding countryside, or simply visit the stables to help groom and feed the horses. Children are welcome in the stables.
The 1st-century Roman Villa of Torre de Palma sits just a few meters from the hotel. One of the most important Roman archaeological sites in Portugal, the ruins date to the first century AD and are intimately tied to the estate's story.
Climb the ancient tower at golden hour for a 360-degree view of the Alentejo plains with a glass of estate wine. Included when booking direct on the hotel website. Universally cited as a guest highlight — the tower view is genuinely special.
