Why It Matters
Named after the Yarra River in Melbourne and listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels, this tiny four-room inn is one of the most thoughtfully executed small lodgings in the western Catskills. The Saturday Supper Club — a seasonal multi-course dinner open to locals and guests alike — has developed its own following and sets The Yarra apart from the usual Catskills inn experience.
The Yarra is a four-room boutique inn inside a historic 1890 house in Roscoe, NY — right at the western edge of the Catskills. Owner Sonya Wurster (a Melbourne-born former academic) designed and renovated the place herself, drawing from the Melbourne dining scene and a love of quiet, thoughtful spaces. The result is somewhere between a proper boutique hotel and a private house: design-led interiors mixing contemporary touches with local Shaker tradition, painstakingly curated art and books, and food that punches well above its weight — including a Saturday Supper Club open to the public.

A premium two-night curated stay package. The inn works with guests before arrival to build a personalized itinerary. For fishing and nature enthusiasts, local guide Matthew Sudol — a former NYSDEC and NYC DEP fisheries and wildlife professional — leads guided fly fishing trips and nature walks on the Beaverkill and surrounding terrain. The package also includes wine tasting, private transportation, and curated restaurant reservations.
The Beaverkill and Willowemoc Rivers — two of the most storied fly-fishing streams in the Northeast — are minutes from the inn. Guests can fish independently or book the Curated Weekend package for a guided experience.
Russel Brook Falls is a short 0.4-mile out-and-back trail near Roscoe featuring a waterfall, accessible to all levels. The inn provides local trail recommendations and the area guide lists AllTrails routes for year-round hiking.
The inn's area guide recommends Roscoe Beer Co., Catskill Brewery (Livingston Manor), Upward Brewing Company, Prohibition Distillery (walkable from the inn), and Seminary Hill Orchard & Cidery. All within a short drive.
