The Villa, Casa Casuarina
Maximalist Versace-era Italian Mediterranean — think bold murals, Medusa motifs, gold everywhere, stained glass, and Italian marble. The whole property is essentially a preserved shrine to one man's extraordinary taste. Not subtle, not understated, not quiet. Guests come for the spectacle, and the spectacle delivers.
You don't need to book a suite to see the mansion — book a table at Gianni's for lunch (from ~$34 for three courses) to access the courtyard and pool area
Why It Matters
It's the former Gianni Versace mansion — the actual one, with his original furnishings, the courtyard where he held infamous celebrity parties, and the front steps where he was shot in 1997. There is no other hotel on earth quite like it. The Thousand Mosaic Pool alone, with its 24-karat gold tiles and million-piece mosaic Medusa, is worth making a reservation at Gianni's just to see it in person.
The former Versace Mansion is one of those places that actually lives up to the legend. Built in 1930 by Standard Oil heir Alden Freeman in Mediterranean Revival style, purchased by Gianni Versace in 1992, and the site of his murder on its front steps in 1997, the 19,000-square-foot villa operates today as a boutique hotel with 10 to 13 suites. Every inch of the place is exactly as Versace left it — mural-covered walls, intricate mosaic floors, a 54-foot pool lined with 24-karat gold tiles and over one million Italian mosaic pieces. The restaurant and Onyx Bar are open to non-guests, so even if you can't book a suite, you can eat dinner next to the pool.
