Why It Matters
Listed in The Times Top 100 Best Places to Stay in the UK and named a Top 10 Most Romantic Hotel. TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice winner in both 2023 and 2024. Won the OpenTable Diners' Choice 2024 for its restaurant. Part of Tablet Hotels.
The Tempus opened in May 2023, built from original stone, slate, and timber salvaged from old farm buildings on the 150-acre Charlton Hall Estate. The interiors — designed by Jeffreys Interiors — take their cue from Alice in Wonderland's 'entirely bonkers' philosophy: every one of the 41 rooms across six buildings is different, layered with bold colour, disco balls, copper baths, and chandelier accents. The restaurant, The Orangery, has its own following as a standalone destination and draws non-guests for everything from weekday market menus to Sunday roasts.
