Standard East Village
Sleek, architectural, a little eccentric. Grey-and-white rooms with bold accents and big city views. Younger-leaning crowd (21+ age requirement applies). Artsy East Village energy with design-hotel bones.
Request a high floor — views above floor 15 toward the Empire State Building are noticeably better.
Why It Matters
One of the few serious design hotels in the East Village — originally the Cooper Square Hotel, a neighborhood landmark since 2008 — it offers unobstructed Manhattan views from floors 3 through 20 that most midtown luxury properties can't match at this price point. The building itself, with its glass tower rising above a preserved tenement entry, is worth a look from the outside.
A 21-story tower disguised behind a low-rise tenement facade on Cooper Square, The Standard East Village is the rare NYC hotel that earns its views. Originally opened in 2008 as the Cooper Square Hotel — designed by Carlos Zapata Studio with interiors by Milanese architect Antonio Citterio — it joined The Standard Hotels family in 2011. The bones are sharp: floor-to-ceiling windows, a street-level garden tucked behind brick, an all-day café spilling onto the Bowery, and a Mexican-inspired restaurant from chef Maycoll Calderón drawing both guests and neighborhood regulars.
