Request the Hinoki suite for its double-aspect balcony and top-floor position — most guests rate it the best room in the house

Why It Matters

A once-in-a-decade convergence of talent: Tadao Ando's architecture, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Michelin-starred cooking, and a museum-grade art collection, all in nine suites above the Shirakawa River. The hotel earned 2 Michelin Keys in both 2024 and 2025, and its restaurant received 1 Michelin Star in 2025. It's the only sister property to Villa La Coste — the beloved Provençal art estate.

Nine suites on a quiet canal in the heart of Gion, each named for a natural material — silk, lacquer, hinoki, stone. Tadao Ando designed the building, Rémi Tessier did the interiors, and Irish hotelier Paddy McKillen (owner of Villa La Coste in Provence) curated an extraordinary art collection including works by Damien Hirst, Louise Bourgeois, and Gerhard Richter. From the street, the dark timber facade barely registers. Step through the noren curtain marked with a single calligraphic 'S' and you're in a long concrete corridor — classic Ando — that sets the mood immediately. Jean-Georges Vongerichten's restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2025, the six-seat bar does omakase cocktails, and the staff operates on an omotenashi service philosophy that borders on telepathic.
