Why It Matters
One of Europe's great grand hotels. Ireland's Constitution was drafted on-site. The Horseshoe Bar (opened 1957) is a genuine Dublin institution. Celebs from Grace Kelly to JFK chose this as their Dublin base. The hotel turned 200 years old in 2024 — and was still the right choice.
The Shelbourne has occupied the northeast corner of St. Stephen's Green since 1824, and two centuries in, it remains the definitive address in Dublin. This is where Michael Collins drafted the Irish Constitution in Room 112, where Princess Grace and JFK both chose to stay, and where Seamus Heaney and Brendan Behan used to drink. The public rooms — gleaming marble, soaring ceilings, genuine antiques — are worth visiting even if you're not staying. The 233 rooms and suites vary significantly in size and character; the Heritage category occupies the oldest, most atmospheric part of the building and tends to sell out first.

The entry-level suite option. The key upgrade is a separate seating area apart from the sleeping zone — making the space feel genuinely suite-like rather than just a bigger room. Two double beds make it flexible for couples and friends alike.

Heritage Parkview Room
The most sought-after room category at The Shelbourne. Named for its direct views over St. Stephen's Green, these sit in the original Victorian wing of the hotel — higher ceilings, more architectural detail, and that singular view of the park. 300 thread-count Egyptian cotton bedding, elegant marble bathroom, luxury robes and slippers.
Heritage Premium Room
Sits in the most historic section of the hotel — the part that has barely changed since Victorian architect John McCurdy designed the current building in the 1860s. Elevated finishes and character, for occasions that require something especially special.
Heritage Signature Suites
Named in honour of famous former guests — each tells a story through dedicated memorabilia across the separate living room and bedroom. The Countess Markievicz Suite (No. 538) and the Maureen O'Hara Suite are among these. Views over St. Stephen's Green are the calling card. Worth the premium if you care about history.
Princess Grace Suite
The flagship suite, and genuinely fit for the name. Two bedrooms, two marble bathrooms, a separate living room, and a dining room that seats up to 8. Decorated with elegant furnishings and a library dedicated to Grace Kelly's life — she and Prince Rainier of Monaco were regulars here. The most private and spacious option in the hotel.
KingQueen Guest Room
The standout detail here is the rainfall shower in the marble bathroom — a notch above the standard bath/shower combo in other rooms. Everything else follows the house standard: Egyptian cotton bedding, robes, slippers, minibar.

Traditional afternoon tea in the Lord Mayor's Lounge — tiered stands of dainty sandwiches, homemade scones with clotted cream and preserves, and seasonal pastries from the pastry team. Served with fine teas or specialty coffees. One of Dublin's most sought-after afternoon tea experiences.
Choose a bottle of Champagne and watch (or attempt) the sommelier's dramatic sabrage — removing the cork and its glass collar with a single sweep of a ceremonial sabre. Available to anyone brave enough to try.
A Shelbourne signature in The Saddle Room. The finest Black Angus beef from Cork, carved tableside by the chef from a traditional carving trolley. A nod to the hotel's long history of theatrical, old-school Irish service.
Room 112 — renamed the Constitution Room — is where Michael Collins convened a committee in 1922 to draft Ireland's first Constitution. The original antique table and chairs used in the signing are still in place, along with two original copies of the document. Worth asking reception about access.
