The Screen
Artsy and refined — somewhere between a ryokan in sensibility and a design boutique in execution. Calm and intimate. Feels curated rather than slick.
The room number matters a lot here — browse the individual room pages on screen-hotel.jp before booking. Room 102 (tatami tea room, red rushes) is strikingly different from Room 401 (misty morning dew theme).
Why It Matters
Concept-driven design hotel where every room is a distinct commission by a different artist or designer — from a tatami craftsman to an internationally award-winning architect. Post-renovation the property now offers 15 unique rooms. No gym, no pool, no spa facility to speak of. What it has instead is meticulous room design, Simmons pillow-top beds (a first for Kansai when introduced), Jacuzzi tubs, KORRES amenities, and a genuinely good French-Kyoto restaurant.
The Screen bills itself as Japan's first personalized boutique hotel, and the concept actually delivers. Fifteen rooms — each designed by a different domestic or international creator — mean no two stays are alike. It's right by Kyoto Imperial Palace, with a French-Japanese fusion restaurant and a seasonal champagne garden on the top terrace that opens from late April through October.
